When to Replace Brake Disc and Pad

1169

So for the first 200 kilometers, use the brakes softly and moderately. In standard usage, brake discs need to be replaced every 60 or 70 thousand kilometers. However, since it is not always possible to detect the damage on the discs, it is useful to change the brake discs at every pad change. In this way, you can both increase brake performance and save time. If you still need clear reasons for the replacement of brake discs, here are some tips on when to replace your brake disc and pad;

  • Noisy brakes: Noise during braking is considered the first sign of replacing the brake discs. If the disc is warped, it is possible to hear creaking sounds from the wheels. You may hear a scraping sound on heavily worn discs, while crooked and crooked discs squeak.
  • Vibrations from the Wheel: When the wear on the brake discs is advanced, you can also feel it while pressing the brake pedal. The crooked brake discs vibrate on the pedal each time the brake is applied. This situation, which is caused by the pedal no longer making full contact with the disc, can be dangerous, especially at high speeds.
  • Long stopping distanc: One of the best ways to detect worn discs is to compare stopping distances. If your vehicle is stopping later than your old braking distances, it may be time to renew the discs.
  • Grooves on the disc: Although the brake discs wear later than the pads, they can wear away from their normal structure after tens of thousands of kilometers of driving. If you observe grooves on the edges of this part, which is in constant contact with the brake pads, you need to replace your brake discs as soon as possible.

How to replace the brake disc?

If you have the necessary equipment, changing the brake discs consists of very simple steps. Before you start removing old brake discs, you can wear a pair of gloves and follow these steps:

  1. Before jacking up the vehicle, you must loosen the bolts on the rims sufficiently without removing them.
  2. Then you have to raise the vehicle to a level where you can remove the tire with the help of a jack
  3. At this point, you can put chocks or rocks on the other wheels to prevent the vehicle from slipping.
  4. After removing the tire, you should unscrew the two nuts behind the caliper that connects the brake pads to the disc, using the appropriate socket wrench.
  5. After separating the caliper and pads from the disc, it remains to unscrew a few screws holding the disc.
  6. You have to strike a few blows with the hammer to remove the brake disc.
  7. After placing the new brake disc on the axle, you should make sure that you tighten the fastening bolts well.
  8. After replacing the brake caliper and pads as you removed them, all that remains is to install the wheel and tighten the bolts.
